What does this mean for infrastructure inside and into buildings? Hussam Haroun, Founding Director of edge-datacentre firm Edge X Networks and Rob McCann, Founder of Broadband consulting firm Clearcable and President of the Hamilton Technology Centre, combine their field experience in connectivity and compute to bring a view into the new technologies building operators can expect and the demands on broadband connectivity. Building automation and telecommunications systems within any given building are often a minefield of disparate dis-integrated proprietary systems each responsible for their own independent operation oblivious to the needs of the other. Smart buildings have struggled to have truly integrated systems where HVAC, lighting, plumbing, phone systems, message boards, elevators, and all other devices work in concert for the comfort of the occupants. Moreover, retrofitting existing buildings has been near impossible. Now, however we are witnessing the scale deployment of newer, long range, low power, open standards that are emerging to level the playing field and bring together M2M communication and enable single pane of glass control. In fact, the telecom panel, the build automation equipment, data network, and the cloud are all quickly integrating and the lowly wiring closet is becoming the heart of the building. Moreover, as employer tenants struggle to manage work-from-home and new workplace safety processes in support the return to work from the pandemic, employees’ needs to be able transparently shift from home to workplace. Meanwhile, building managers need to control the full extent of the operation remotely. Both place new demands on the connectivity inside and into the building. Together, these emerging factors will prompt building operators to think about the long-term network infrastructure requirements and work with their vendors to ensure viable interoperability. Landscape Ontario Labour Assessment (LOLA) Webinar 3 - Automation Opportunities at Vineland As part of Landscape Ontario Labour Assessment Seminar Series, Hussam Haroun, Program Leader & Director of the Automation Group at Vineland Research and Innovation Centre will present “Introduction to Automation in Horticulture,” where he will be introducing the high-level opportunities that exist for making use of automation in horticulture, and also talk about the common challenges encountered when developing and deploying automation solutions.

This award honours the achievements of an OCE-supported post-secondary student who has created an innovative start-up with an economic impact to Ontario. The winner receives a $25,000 award to make their ideas into a viable business. 2016 Finalists: Hussam Haroun of Cinnos, Paul Kudlow of TrendMD, and Chekema Prince of Pression.

To celebrate the wrapping up of five years of applied research focused on Canada’s Automation Cluster, Vineland hosted an event on February 21, 2023 showcasing research and facilitating discussions on the future of automation in Canadian horticulture. A panel discussion “The Future of Automation in Horticulture” took place, moderated by Dr. Darby McGrath.
